How I got here…
I started out with undiagnosed ADHD, overcoming barriers including boredom, big emotions, moving country, balancing jobs and projects, obsessing over hobbies, and running my own businesses.
I started out studying zoology, and my professional life started with bat conservation and river restoration (with a boredom mitigating side of fitness instruction). When things changed in 2020, I put down my waders and dedicated my time to fitness, ultimately resulting in The Pole Company, an international fitness coaching business that I managed and ran with my team.
In hindsight, it’s not a surprise that I ended up suffering a major burnout in 2023.
After that, I promised to myself things would never go that far again. The experiences and learning I’ve had since hitting my own rock bottom mean I am obsessed with making sure no other business owners have the same experience - it sucked, 0 stars, do not recommend.
No matter how worthy the cause, your level of experience, or your unwavering commitment, problems sometimes get overwhelming. When that happens sometimes all you need is an outside perspective. Sometime to sit with you and say:
“We can do this. We will get through this together, and this is where we are going to start.”
Running a business is hard. Then adding ADHD into the mix can make that even harder. People with ADHD are more likely to go self employed and more likely to experience burnout. We need the right support so our business allows us to flourish, not wear us down.
If you’re feeling stuck and overwhelmed, your business isn’t going as planned, and your ADHD symptoms are kicking your butt, I promise you, you’re not alone. You’re not stuck. It won’t last forever.
Before I knew I had ADHD, I knew the “just do it” approach did not work for me, and I doubt it works for most people. Certainly not the people I lived and worked with, who coincidentally were often ADHDers themselves. I saw the struggles they had with starting tasks and following through with plans, and that resulted in a lengthy research rabbit hole that turned into a book: Why You Skipped Your Workout.
Why You Skipped Your Workout started with a simple question - Why don’t we do the things we want to do? As I researched and wrote, I started to see how much skipping a workout parallels procrastination and avoidance in all other areas of life, including running and growing your own business. As I wrote, the book evolved. It’s not a book about exercise, it’s about everything that makes exercise possible.
I spent 2 years researching why taking action - even action we desperately want to take - can be so challenging. It will come as no surprise that it’s complicated. It depends. It takes understanding yourself, your strengths, your motivations, and your ADHD brain to overcome barriers between you and what you want to do.
Seonaidh Jamieson Coaching & Consulting
And after a couple more twists and turns, here we are. With years of experience coaching hundreds of clients, 10 years running businesses, the lived experience of undiagnosed ADHD into adulthood, and the skills I’ve gained as a Project Manager and L6 Business Growth Coach, I am running my dream business.
I’m still passionate about my past projects (I regularly run bat awareness training for an ecological consultancy, and revisit my love of fitness instruction through Terrain Safe Manual Handling), but problem solving and supporting other business owners is my professional headline - and I love it.
Burnout, debt, neurodivergent brain struggles, and unmet potential should not be the norm for small business owners. You deserve the support, financial stability, and business model to allow you to thrive, not just survive. Besides, the happier you are, the better you are for your business and your clients!
A Quick Thank You!
At the end of my book, I have a gushy thank you to everyone who has purchased and read my work. I have the same appreciation for everyone who has shared their stories with me, trusted me with their struggles, celebrated their wins, and allowed me to walk with them towards their goals. It’s because of them that I can support you now, and that will always mean the world to me.
